Summerland council pay to rise in 2023

Meal expenses, benefit packages also affected by policy updates

Summerland council members will see a pay increase in 2023.

At a meeting on Nov. 28, council adopted a policy on reimbursement of expenses and a policy on council remuneration.

The remuneration task force’s recommendations were for a pay increase of two per cent, beginning Jan. 1. In addition, the limit for meal expenses has increased.

Elected officials will be eligible to enroll in a benefits package with council members paying half the premium and the municipality paying the other half.

In addition, the remuneration policy has been amended to allow for a stipend of $600 a month for the deputy mayor.

The deputy mayor role was announced at council’s inaugural meeting on Nov. 7.

Meal expenses have also increased for when council members are at out-of-town events and conferences. The increase works out to $17 a day, but the impact on municipal finances is difficult to determine as there is no set number of conferences mayor and council will attend in a given year.

The cost of increasing council pay by two per cent adds $2,985 to the elected official compensation in 2023. The monthly stipend for the deputy mayor adds another $7,200 a year. The annual cost of the municipality’s 50 per cent contribution to a benefits package for mayor and council members is $18,050 a year.

The total budget for Summerland in 2022 was $17.8 million.
