A transient camper from Quebec was handed a $1,150 fine for having a campfire during a fire ban.

Cpl. Brian Evans of the Keremeos RCMP detachment said an officer was called to the dike area of Pine Park on Sun., Sept. 17 around 8 p.m. after a call came in about a campfire.

The fire was extinguished and the man received the ticket.

“I think it’s the first one actually issued in this area,” he said. “It’s a big fine. It’s a big risk and this being so close to town is just ignorance.”

A full fire ban is still in place in the Kamloops Fire Centre.
