International Volunteer Day is Dec. 5

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen is marking International Volunteer Day by launching its own volunteer program.

International Volunteer Day is held each year on Dec. 5 to celebrate volunteers and to show the impact of volunteer efforts.

“Volunteerism and a strong sense of community go hand-in-hand, especially in smaller communities,” said Karla Kozakevich, chair of the regional district. “The RDOS has been fortunate to have such a diverse and passionate volunteer base for many years.”

The regional district offers a variety of volunteer opportunities within areas such as parks and recreation, emergency management and committees.

Organizers say volunteering allows people to connect with their communities while sharing skills, supporting others and having fun. In addition to contributing time and expertise, there are other benefits including gaining valuable work experience, expanding social networks and staying physically and mentally active.
