Offices of the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) will be closed to observe National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Friday, Sept. 30. Campbell Mountain landfill will remain open.
National Day for Truth and Reconciliation provides an opportunity to engage and educate people about British Columbia’s colonial history and how it has impacted Indigenous communities.
“The RDOS is committed to advancing reconciliation with Indigenous peoples,” says RDOS chair Mark Pendergraft. “This is a long-term goal that will require ongoing relationship-building.”
Penticton residents have two opportunities this year to recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Friday, Sept. 30.
From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., the Okanagan Nation Alliance and the City of Penticton, among others, will host and support events in honour of the statutory holiday.
First up is a Walk for Children that starts at the Peach in Penticton and sees participants make their way along the channel to the Syilx Indian Residential School Monument.
