Reception centre for Keremeos Creek fire evacuees opens in Keremeos

547 properties remain on evacuation order and 1,050 on evacuation alert.

The Village of Keremeos Emergency Support Services (ESS) Reception Centre will be open Monday Aug. 8, at 9 am. The Reception Centre is located at the Victory Hall at 427-7th Ave. in Keremeos. Residents in Evacuation Order areas can register there for supports.

The reception centre in Keremeos was also open on Sunday. The City of Penticton ESS Reception Centre at Princess Margaret Secondary School at 120 Green Ave, was closed Sunday but will reopen at 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday Aug. 8.

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen Emergency Operations Centre (RDOS EOC) is in regular communication with BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) to assess the status of all evacuation alerts and orders. No changes to orders or alerts have been made at this time as of Sunday, Aug. 7.

There are currently 547 properties on evacuation order and 1,050 on evacuation alert.

Crews successfully brought the fire’s edge from difficult to access terrain down to workable control lines. Over the next few hours, increased smoke may still be visible.

The fire remains within control lines above the Olalla and Sheep Creek areas where the burns were completed. Crews will work overnight to patrol and mop up.

It was a challenging night for crews on the Keremeos Creek wildfire on Saturday into Sunday.

Winds caused turmoil on the northeast flank while the south flank saw spotting.

BC Wildfire says no structures were damaged overnight Saturday into Sunday, though.
