A Penticton man who went on a spree of thefts will spend another 44 days in jail after time served.
The sentence of 30 months and 15 days was handed down at Penticton’s Law Courts on April 14 and took into account the 19 months that 34-year-old Patrick Ryan Kendrick has spent in custody so far. As a result, Kendrick was sentenced to another 45 days in jail.
Some of the crimes that Kendrick was sentenced for dated back to 2019, while others dated back to 2020.
According to the judge, Kendrick had taken items that he knew were stolen from a storage unit from Penticton, and then on Jan. 21, 2019, Kendrick took a stolen stereo system and speakers to a pawn shop and sold them there.
On March 21, 2019, Kendrick was arrested by RCMP in Summerland. While being chased, he tossed aside his backpack, which had a loaded sawed-off shotgun inside that he had been planning to sell for $100.
On May 19, 2019, police were called to the home Kendrick and his ex-girlfriend owned, where he was punching the windows of her car. He hid in a shed and fled the scene before struggling with police before being arrested.
After being released in August 2019, he failed to appear to his bail supervisor.
In April 2020, Kendrick went to a property on Industrial Place and cut the lock off before making his way inside. Kendrick then attempted to flee when the RCMP arrived before being taken into custody.
He was searched and was found to be in possession of stolen property, a fuel card and a car amplifier.
The thefts were driven by the need for money to pay for drugs and alcohol, according to the judge’s decision. These were the first crimes that Kendrick was facing in adult court.
In making his decision, the judge cited a presentencing report and psychiatric report prepared for him. According to that report, Kendrick has been diagnosed with clinical depression, PTSD and ADHD.
According to the judge, while Kendrick had been receptive to suggestions of support, he had difficulty in following through with connecting to the supports offered.
The psychiatric report, noting that it was a limited assessment, found that Kendrick’s risk of reoffending was tied to his risk of relapsing into substance abuse.
“Given Mr. Kendrick’s poor record of reporting on bail, his removal from recovery programs, and the fact that several of the offences are for obstructing police or failing to report, I’m not satisfied that he can serve that sentence in the community,” said the judge.
The one and a half further months that Kendrick was sentenced to will be followed by a 12-month probation period.
