Online vaccination registry launched as B.C. targets non-immunized kids

Move comes as kids go back to school, in wake of measles outbreak earlier this year

Parents will soon be able to check online to make sure their kids are up to date on their immunizations.

In a news release Tuesday, the province said most parents will be able to find their school-aged child’s records in a government registry on immunizebc.ca by the end of September.

The move comes as part of an effort to vaccinate kids after a measles outbreak led to dozens of cases reported in various areas of the province earlier this year.

The government eventually launched a catch-up immunization program, which led to more than 37,000 new kids being immunized against the measles.

Mandatory reporting of whether a child is vaccinated or not went into effect on July 1. Education Minister Rob Fleming has said school support staff and public health officials would be speaking with parents whose children were not fully protected.
