Notice filed on building without permit

Municipal staff will file a notice on a title after construction of a building proceeded without a valid building permit.

The Section 57 title will remain in place until all work on the building has passed inspections.

Staff will also begin the legal action to either have the construction on Blagborne Avenue brought into compliance with municipal bylaws or be removed from the site.

Construction on the building, a three-vehicle garage with a suite attached, was discovered in September. A building permit had not been issued.

A stop work order was posted in late September and a second stop work order was posted in early January, after the original order had been removed.

Construction had continued after the initial stop work order had been issued, municipal planner Ian McIntosh said.

George Gionatti, representing the applicants, said the proper documentation could be processed quickly.

“This could be resolved within a matter of days,” he said.

But Mayor Janice Perrino said the process could take longer. “Putting a building permit in and getting it signed off takes time,” she said.

Coun. Gordon Clark said the violation must be treated seriously, since the stop work order was disregarded.

“I find it troubling that we’re being asked to treat it with a wink and a nod,” he said.
