Update 12:30 p.m.:
Bystanders and RCMP helped some Home Hardware workers to extinguish a brushfire before it could spread to rows of lumber at Penticton’s Home Hardware.
“It was a bit of a team effort; there were some bystanders on scene right away stomping around the perimeter trying to knock the flames down and then RCMP were at the intersection and somebody honked and waved them in,” said fire captain Erik Jorgensen. “They used the fire extinguisher of their vehicle, which was very helpful for us given the proximity to all the wood sitting right there.”
The cause of the fire is currently undetermined and under investigation. The location of the fire was right beside Highway 97 along the Channel Parkway.
With conditions risky for fires, the assistance of the bystanders and RCMP was very much appreciated.
“It’s definitely hot and dry, and we’re taking everything very seriously and making sure to get on it as quick as we can,” said Jorgensen.

Penticton Fire is on scene of a grass fire that started in a ditch beside the Channel Parkway on Tuesday.
Around 11:45 a.m., flames were reported to be getting close to a pile of lumber behind the Home Hardware.
At noon, firefighters were establishing a guard around fire.
The area of the fire is near the Channel and Fairview Road. It’s not known if traffic on the channel (Highway 97) is being impacted.
The Penticton Western News has a reporter going to the scene. This will be updated as more information becomes available.
