Penticton’s annual Peach Classic Triathlon has been cancelled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

This is the first time in 38 years that the triathlon will not take place. Organizers say the Peach Classic was the longest consistently run race in B.C.

“It is with great regret that we have taken this step. The health and safety of our athletes, volunteers, organizers and sponsors are our first priority. The organization has therefore decided that the cancellation of the event at this time is the fairest way to proceed,” reads a notice by event organizers on their website.

The race was scheduled to take place on July 19. Organizers made the decision to cancel the event in light of the fact that athletes would not be able to train in the months leading up to the event due to the closure of training facilities throughout the province. There is also uncertainty as to whether or not limitations on the number of people allowed at gatherings will be lifted in time.

While the organizers cannot provide refunds, arrangements have been made for all registered athletes to be assigned a 2021 rollover code they can use when registration opens in the Fall for 2021. Athletes can expect their code emailed to them in the fall once the 2021 registration opens.
