Council to form economic committee

The municipality will take steps to form an economic strategic action committee in the new year.

The municipality will take steps to form an economic strategic action committee in the new year.

At the municipal council meeting on Monday evening, council voted to hold a town hall meeting to attract members for the new committee.

At present, the Summerland Chamber of Economic Development and Tourism, the Summerland Merchants’ Committee and the newly formed Summerland Economic Improvement Group all exist to promote and strengthen Summerland businesses.

Mayor Janice Perrino said the new committee would not overlap with the existing organizations. Instead, it would work with council to take action for economic development. She said a study conducted two years ago suggested a business committee should be established.

“The best ideas are out in our community,” Perrino said.

Coun. Bruce Hallquist said Summerland has had an economic development committee in the past. It was made up of one councillor and several members of the business community.

A town hall meeting for the new committee will be held in the new year.
