The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen will hold a community discussion to find a suitable site for a new fire station n Keremeos.
The event will be held Wednesday, April 9 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Victory Hall, 427 7th Ave., Keremeos.
“The current Keremeos and District Volunteer Fire Department station needs replacement,” said fire chief Jordy Bosscha.
“In order to best serve the community of Keremeos, defined areas of Electoral Areas B and G, and parts of Lower Similkameen Indian Band, securing a site for the next phase of this project will be essential.”
The present fire hall in Keremeos is more than 80 years old and was not built as a fire station.
It has been modified over the years, but three assessments, by the Fire Underwriters Survey in 2022, one focussed on WorkSafeBC compliance in 2023, and a third on replacement options by FireWise Consulting in 2024 have stated the building no longer meets modern fire service needs.
The goal of the meeting is to discuss location options for a new station that will optimize response times while minimizing risks from flooding, wildfires, and highway hazards.
“We’re looking forward to engaging the community to hear their thoughts and considerations,” said Deborah Jones-Middleton, senior manager of protective services with the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen.
“Balancing the urban, rural, and agricultural needs within the response district will be a key part of the planning process.”
