Children are often asked, “What do you want to do when you get older?”

For many students, the time has come to begin thinking about the answer to this commonly asked question, and they often find it a difficult one.

Summerland Secondary School will have their first visit from WorkBC’s Find Your Fit Tour.

The tour is an interactive, student based event that goes around B.C. to help students find out where their skills lay. Summerland Secondary School has been waiting three years to host this event.

On Feb. 13, students will get the chance to test their abilities during school hours from 8:35 a.m. to 2:59 p.m. Students from Summerland Middle School will also take part.

The students will learn about many different in demand careers, and test hands-on if it is something that they could pursue.

This event isn’t only for students. Parents and the public are welcome too, from 3:15 to 7 p.m.

Have you ever wanted more out of your career? Still haven’t found that dream job? Currently unemployed? This event could assist with your search as well.

Charles Lay, the school’s careers counsellor, has organized this event, though WorkBC will be doing most of the set up and bringing equipment to practice skills, such as carpentry or computer programming. This event will be in the high school’s gym.

“This event is meant to broaden people’s views of careers. Many people don’t realize that they can do more than what they think they’re capable of,” said Lay.

Everyone will be able to get something out of this event, even if they’ve decided what career they want to work towards.

Sessions will take place during the day for different grades, and a different outlook and mindset will be taken on to cater to each of these needs.

This will include delving further into their plans so they can have a clear idea of what the future holds.

There will be 16 activity stations with a wide variety of job prospects, as well as an information booth where students can dig deeper into a career of their choice.
