Richard Barkwill is seeking re-election to Summerland’s municipal council.
Barkwill, a two-term incumbent, has filed his nomination papers for a third term on council.
He was born and raised in Summerland and says Summerland is a unique community which he wants to keep special.
He said the recent decision to deny a variance for the 32-slip private dock at the Oasis development as an example of how Summerland can have progress, while still preserving the look, feel and character of Summerland for everyone.
Barkwill added that he believes tougher economic times are coming. As a certified public accountant and auditor, he believes he is in the best position to keep a close eye on municipal expenses.
“Our roads are in bad condition, but they are expensive,” he said, adding that $6 million is being spent on Giant’s Head Road this year. “There is $770,000 in the budget for Victoria Road South in 2023 and $3 million in the 2024 budget for Prairie Valley Road. By comparison, next year a one per cent tax increase will generate approximately $100,000, a mere fraction of the millions needed. Add to this the increase in inflation, and some tough decisions on financing are going to have to be made.”
The municipal election will be held on Oct. 15. Summerland voters will choose a mayor and six municipal councillors to serve for a four-year term.
