The sexual assault case for Kelowna’s former mayor was put over, once again.

Colin Basran was scheduled for an arraignment in Kelowna’s BC Supreme Court on June 6, but rather than enter a plea of guilty of not guilty, the court date was rescheduled for June 23.

The case first appeared in Kelowna courts on Jan. 24, after Basran was charged with sexual assault on Dec. 7.

The charges stem from an incident on May 11, 2022, while Basran was still in office.

The alleged assault reportedly occurred on the same day that the then mayor attended a Tourism Kelowna event at the Coast Capri Hotel.

Basran is currently charged with an indictable offence but has not yet entered a plea and the Crown prosecutor Brock Martland has not yet announced whether he will proceed summarily or by indictment.

Charges of sexual assault are considered to be a hybrid charge which encompasses a range of assaults, from unwanted touching, to rape. Typically, early in the trial the Crown will decide whether they will proceed summarily, which is less severe, or by indictment, which is a serious offence.

The former mayor is being represented by high profile criminal defence lawyer Richard Peck.

The complainant’s identity is protected by a publication ban.
