The proposed construction of a six-storey building featuring both commercial retail space and residential units in the North Gateway of Penticton is headed to a public hearing July 19.

City council voted to send the project to a public hearing at its July 5 meeting, after being presented with a plan that would see a 70-unit apartment building constructed on the 600-block of Eckhardt Avenue.

The development will include 2,600 square feet of commercial space on the first floor.

“This is our main entry into our city of Penticton and it can be very discouraging as you come in there’s empty spaces of undeveloped land,” said Coun. Judy Sentes. “I’m really excited to see this come forward.”

Developers are hoping to build on 650 and 666 Eckhardt, just east of Highway 97 and Vees Drive. The latter address is currently occupied by a single-family home.

Tuesday’s proposal didn’t conclude before concerns were brought to the table, however, with Counc. James Miller asking city staff whether the proposed building would interfere with the flight path of the regional airport.

“We are working with the airport to ensure that there is no conflict,” responded Nicole Capewell, a city planner.

The tabling of the proposal coincides with the recent approval of the North Gateway redevelopment project, which will see 2,250 new units and 350 hotel rooms added to the surrounding area.
