A new Korean martial arts club is celebrating their grand opening on Jan. 21 at Penticton's Concordia Lutheran Church Gym.

Head Instructor Danyel Degenhardt will host the event starting at 6:30 p.m. with live demonstrations and prizes.

Degenhardt practices Haidong Gumdo with his wife Ashley, and previously ran a club in New Zealand when they were living there.

“The more I trained, the more fun and challenging it was," said Degenhardt in a press release. "I’m grateful for the opportunities it has provided me, like competing at World Mulimpia in South Korea and supporting families to achieve their Black Belts together.”

Haidong Gumdo is a Korean sword martial art that was formally established in the 1980s.

Individual patterns, choreographed sparring, paper cutting and candle snuffing are a few of the skills students learn when they join the club.

Youth between the ages fo eight to 12 are welcome to join the club but require an older member of the family to join with them.

Admission to the grand opening on Jan. 21 is by donation.
