Police in Summerland are noticing a drop in violent crime figures, according to the latest policing statistics.
At the Nov. 26 council meeting, Summerland council presented its third quarter policing statistics.
The detachment received a total of 736 calls for service in the third quarter of the year, down from 809 in the same time period in 2023.
So far this year, going from January to September, the detachment has received 2,019 calls for service, down from 2,107 in the same time period one year earlier.
In all categories of violent crime, numbers have declined in Summerland.
The Summerland RCMP detachment had 27 violent crime incidents in the third quarter of 2024, a 48 per cent decrease from the 52 incidents in the third quarter of 2023.
From January to September, police in Summerland recorded 95 violent crime incidents, a 20 per cent decrease from the 119 incidents in the same time frame in 2023.
Property crime figures in the third quarter of 2024 were close to the figures reported in the third quarter of 2023.
However, the number of frauds increased significantly. In the third quarter of 2024, 25 frauds were reported, up from nine in the same period of 2023. From January to September, 51 frauds were reported, compared with 49 in the same time period in 2023.
Overall property crime statistics have decreased in 2024. From January to September, 255 incidents have been reported. This is a 15 per cent drop from the 300 incidents reported in the first three quarters of 2023.
