An online scam is circulating in Summerland involving Peavey Mart, a Canadian hardware company that recently announced they are closing down permanently and selling off their inventory.

On Feb. 10, the Summerland RCMP were notified of the scam, It involves fake websites and social media accounts similar to the actual Peavey Mart website.

The fake sites offer products at 90 per cent off and claims to provide free shipping on all orders.

Cst. Patti Evans of the Summerland RCMP detachment said Peavey Mart does not offer online shopping and all sales are in-store only. Their website is https://peaveymart.com/.

Residents are being advised not to click on links received from an unknown number or sender, and to be wary of clicking on sites that pop up on social media.

Police also recommend using an internet browser to navigate to the known business website, or call a nearby location and confirm the correct website and any sales that may be happening.

The RCMP urge people to keep safe from online scams by not clicking on unknown or unsolicited links. Those who are the victim of a fraud are encouraged to report it to their credit card company and to contact the Summerland RCMP non-emergency line at 250-494-7416.
