The municipality of Summerland issued 21 building permits in September, with a total construction value of $4,428,900.
The value of the permits is above average for the month in Summerland, with the average value at around $3.6 million for the month over the past four years.
The value of building permits was higher in September 2020 and September 2021, but lower in September 2022 and September 2023, Brad Dollevoet, director of development services for Summerland, said in a report to council.
Since the beginning of the year, Summerland has issued 135 building permits, with a total construction value of $24,056,562. This is down considerably from past years.
From January to September 2023, Summerland issued 144 building permits, with a total construction value of $36,927,123. During the same period in 2021, the municipality issued 174 building permits with a total construction value of $54,146,300. That year saw the highest dollar value for building permits issued by the municipality.
Summerland’s development services department has added two new staff members.
Danuta (Dani) Misutka has been hired as a casual senior building official and Nick Braam has been hired as Building Official Level 1.
Dollevoet said the two are working with building permits and occupancy requests which have been submitted to the municipality.
In addition, Summerland has a number of complex, large-scale applications in process at present.
