Special events are planned for three schools closing in the Okanagan Skaha School District.
In June, Carmi Elementary School in Penticton, Parkway Elementary School in Penticton and Giant’s Head Elementary School in Summerland will hold legacy events to celebrate the many years the schools have been open.
At the end of the school year, the three buildings will close as part of the school district’s Long Range Facility Plan.
Carmi Elementary School opened in 1952, Giant’s Head Elementary School has operated since 1974 and Parkway Elementary School has operated since 1976.
During the events, the schools will be open for community members to visit. The events will include games and food will be available to purchase.
Each school is unique and may host activities that best represent their classrooms to "celebrate the many stories of families who have been part of our school communities," the school district says.
The two Penticton schools will have legacy clothing available for purchase. Those interested in purchasing clothing are asked to visit carmi.sd67.bc.ca and parkway.sd67.bc.ca.
Money raised from these purchases will go towards supporting the legacy events, as well as events to bring together the new school communities of KVR Elementary School and Skaha Elementary School in the next year.
James Palanio, chair of the school board, said parent committees have been active in organizing the events.
“The board of education is deeply grateful to the Parent Advisory Committees for their dedication and hard work in planning the school legacy events,” he said. “Your commitment to our school communities is truly commendable, and we appreciate all that you have done to make these events a success."
The Carmi Elementary School event will be held at the school on June 17 from 5 to 7 p.m. At Parkway Elementary School, the event will be on June 17 from 4 to 7 p.m. At Giant’s Head School, the event will be on June 25 from 5 to 7 p.m.
