Street showcase planned for Shakespeare Festival

When drama students from around British Columbia attend the Good Will Shakespeare Festival next month, they will also show the community some of what they are learning.

The festival, from May 11 to 14, will draw close to 500 students for an intensive weekend of drama.

Linda Beaven, coordinator of the festival, said this year, the public will be invited to several events.

On Wednesday, May 11 at 7 p.m., Jeff Topham’s film, Liberia 77, will be shown at Centre Stage Theatre. Tickets for the screening will be available at the Summerland Art Gallery and at the door.

Following the film, Topham will answer questions about the film.

On Friday, May 13 at 1 p.m., people from the community will be given a walk-around tour of the program.Beaven said this came about after requests from some who had wanted to see what the students are learning.

On Saturday, May 14 from 3 to 4 p.m., Henry Street will be closed as students showcase some of their talents for the public.

Beaven said the festival depends on the work of numerous volunteers.

“I have an amazing group of people who are working to make it a success,” she said.

Spaces are still needed for around 60 of the participants. Those interested in taking in billets should call Nancy Johnson at 250-494-9871.
