A new principal has been named for Summerland Secondary School.

Chris Van Bergeyk will begin his role effective Aug. 1.

For the past five years, he has worked as a vice-principal at Kelowna Secondary School. Prior to that, he taught mathematics at Georg Elliot Secondary School in Lake Country and at Burnaby South Secondary School.

He has also been the president of the B.C. Association of Math Teachers and is the lead author for the Pearson Pre-Calculus Math 11 text and the Pearson Pre-Calculus Math 10 text.

Van Bergeyk is looking forward to his role in Summerland.

“It’s an outstanding school and community,” he said.

He added that the relationship between the school and the rest of the community has been strong in the past.

“We want to be seen as a real champion of Summerland,” he said.

Van Bergeyk has been in Summerland to familiarize himself with the school and said he is impressed with what he has seen so far. “I feel very fortunate to be in this school,” he said. “I have not heard a single bad thing about the school or the community.”

Van Bergeyk has a Master of Arts degree in leadership and training from Royal Roads University and a Bachelor of Education from the University of British Columbia.
