A Summerland veteran was honoured for his participation in the D-Day operation of 1944.

The recognition is the highest French order for military and civilian merits. It was established in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte.

Bernhardt, 94, participated in the D-Day operation, the Battle of Normandy and the liberation of France.
