Foster homes needed in Okanagan

Summerland Okanagan Boys and Girls Club Specialized Foster Care program homes

The Okanagan Boys and Girls Club’s Specialized Foster Care program is in need of some foster homes.

At present, the program has two full-time care homes but needs four more, said Laurene Sloboda, program coordinator for the program.

“There is a large need,” she said. “We have kids on the list, waiting for homes.”

The homes are for youths between the ages of six and 18 who have experienced trauma or neglect and need care.

“The underlying goal of our program is to address the attachment needs of our youths,” Sloboda said.

The program’s philosophy is based on the Circle of Courage, an Aboriginal tradition based on four aspects of life. The four parts are mastery of skills, independence, generosity and belonging.

Sloboda said the needs of the youth mean foster parents must make a long-term commitment.

She said the program wants people who are flexible, non-judgemental, open minded and enjoy children.

While the work is challenging, she said it is also rewarding for the families involved.

Those interested are asked to contact Sloboda at 250-493-0512, ext. 116.

A free information session will be held at the Summerland United Church on Thursday, Nov. 3 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Another information session will be held at the Okanagan Boys and Girls Club training room, 1295 Manitoba St., Penticton on Nov. 1 from 7 to 9 p.m.

Those who wish to become foster parents will need to undergo a home study and a criminal record check.
