Fall film series begins on Thursday

The Fall 2011 Kitchen Stove Film series tickets are now on sale with the first feature Cave of Forgotten Dreams screening at the PenMar Cinema this Thursday, Sept. 22 at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.

The fall series will feature Beginners on Oct. 13, Oranges and Sunshine on Nov. 3 and A Dangerous Method on Jan. 19.

At the gallery

Opening on Thursday, Sept. 29 at the Summerland Art Gallery will be a new show featuring abstract paintings by Katherine Pickering.

Play reading

The Summerland Singers and Players September play reading will be next Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. at the Summerland Alliance Church. They will be reading Brighton Beach Memoirs, by Neil Simon.

No experience required, just come out and enjoy a fun evening of reading.

Writing contest

Congratulations to John Arendt, editor of the Summerland Review, who won the fiction category in the Penticton Writers and Publisher writing contest.

History lecture

The Summerland Museum and Archives is presenting a Fur Brigade Trail Bicentennial lecture series on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. at the IOOF Hall. Randy Manuel, Ken Favrholdt and David Gregory, recognized authorities on the Fur Brigade Trail will be speaking.  Admission is by donation.

On stage

This fall will be the 32nd Anniversary of actress Dorian Kohl’s performance of Portrait of a Lady - A Tribute to Margaret Laurence, based on George Ryga’s seminal adaptation of The Stone Angel. Kohl will be reprising this acclaimed piece as a special showcase presentation for the Eighth Annual George Ryga Award Evening, Saturday, Oct. 1 at 8 p.m. at Centre Stage Theatre, Tickets for this special evening are available at Martin’s Flowers, 250-494-5432.

Film club

The Summerland Film Club will be showing Mother: Caring for 7 Billion on Oct. 12 at 7:30 p.m. and Burning the Future: Coal in America on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 7:30 p.m.

Art exhibit

The Neil Bantock Retrospective features everything from the profound to the profane and is currently on display at the Penticton Art Gallery.   The exhibition features a large number of recent and never-before-seen paintings and drawings.
