Canvassers will be knocking on doors in the South Okanagan as they seek donations for the Crime Stoppers program.
Al Sismey, regional coordinator of Crime Stoppers, said the fundraising drive is expected to raise around $8,000 for the crime tips program.
The canvassers from Rocky Mountain Marketing will wear distinctive yellow jackets with their company logo and the Crime Stoppers logo.
They will also have photo identification around their necks.
“We always encourage people to know who they are dealing with,” Sismey said.
He added that the fundraising campaign is important because of the work Crime Stoppers does in the region.
The anonymous crime tips program has been in place in the South Okanagan since 1992.
Since that time, tips received have led to the recovery of more than $1.5 million worth of stolen property and the seizure of more than $11.5 million worth of illegal drugs.
Anyone with crime tips can call 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or send a text message to CRIMES (274637.)
“If you provide people with a safe way of doing what’s right, they will do it,” Sismey said.
The program is run by a volunteer board of directors.
Crime Stoppers does not receive any funding from the government or from any police budget.
