Dancers from Ballet Kelowna will be in Summerland on Saturday as part of a 13-city spring tour.

The tour, which began in Chilliwack on Feb. 25, will show a wide range of dance.

“Traditionally the act of dance creation presupposed the choreographic outcome,” said David LaHay, the company’s artistic director. “However, more frequently today, ballet is a direct consequence of the interplay between the choreographer and the dancers with the consequential outcome unknown until the final moment of creation.”

The performance features Auguste Bournoville’s The flower Festival Pas de Deux and Dvorak Dances, a presentation of Czech composer Antonin Dvorak’s music.

The tour also includes the world premier of Gioconda Barbuto’s Capture and In Stride, which features the music of Glenn Branca.

LaHay said the mixed repertoire program will be an exciting performance for dance aficionados. The show will feature some traditional works and some new and innovative dances.

“Dancing is a living, vibrant art form,” LaHay said. “Today’s choreographers are bringing dance into the 21st century at a very fast pace.”

The dance troupe features just six dancers and LaHay said audiences are often surprised at the small size of the troupe.

This is a tribute to the skill of the members, he added.

“Today’s dancers are so versatile, being able to go from one dance style to another at the drop of a hat,” he said.

The performance will take place in Summerland on March 19 at Centre Stage Theatre.
