Dear Editor:

The premise of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope was simple: raise funds for cancer research; specifically, raise $24.1 million or $1 for every person living in Canada in 1981.

This was a heady goal as fundraising at that level was almost unheard of for any cause. But how would he inspire people to donate? He would run a marathon every day while making his way across Canada – The Marathon of Hope.

People are familiar with Terry Fox’s story. Thirty-seven years after Terry began his run, it continues all around the world. He didn’t do it because he had been affected by cancer. He did it because others were and he held the belief that a cure was possible.

The Terry Fox Foundation continues Terry’s hope of finding a cure for cancer. And while there are still people of all ages battling cancer today there are countless survivors, too!

The Terry Fox Run takes place in Summerland on Sunday, Sept. 17. Registration begins at 10:15 a.m. at the Summerland pool.

The run begins at 11 a.m. but you are welcome to walk, run, ride or roller blade.

You may choose the 1 km, 3.5 km or 5 km distances.
