Sam McGee, named in a Robert Service poem, was a road engineer for the community

One of the best selling poems of all time is The Cremation of Sam McGee, written by Robert Service.

There really was a Sam McGee. He and his wife Ruth (nee Warnes) moved to Summerland in 1909.

Ruth had two sisters living in Summerland. The McGees lived on Lister Avenue and their orchard was near McGee Street by the Summerland Golf course.

Sam was a road engineer and worked for the District of Summerland.
