The Japanese film Shoplifters is the next installment of the Penticton Art Gallery’s Kitchen Stove Film Series.

The upcoming installment of the Kitchen Stove film series follows a Tokyo family of shoplifters who one day take more than just groceries.

The subtitled film Shoplifters, from Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda, follows a makeshift family planning a heist at a grocery store.

A middle-aged man (Lily Frank), and a young boy (Kairi Jyo) walk into the store and snatch goods.

But after the duo pulls off their heist, they find a four-year-old girl (Miyu Sasaki) outside on a balcony freezing. The pair takes the girl back to their poor but happy home and discover signs of abuse on her body and decide to keep her.

Shoplifters was the winner of the 2018 Palme d’Or award and two viewings are being offered at the Landmark 7 Cinema at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m on Jan. 17. Pre-purchased tickets are $13 and can be bought at Penticton Art Gallery or at The Book Shop. Tickets are available at the door for $15.
