A workshop organized by the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen will focus on protecting riparian habitats in the region.

Evan Antonijevic, coordinator of the event and program director for the Okanagan Xeriscape Association, said an estimated 85 per cent of riparian habitats in the South Okanagan and Similkameen have been lost as a result of urban development in valley bottoms.

These wetlands are considered endangered habitats.

The presentation and workshop will show landowners how development and landscape choices can affect riparian habitats.

In addition to Antonijevic, speakers will include Don Gayton, coordinator of the Okanagan Wetlands Strategy and Alison Peatt, shared environmental planner with Summerland and the regional district and the South Okanagan Similkameen Conservation Program.

The workshop will be held April 8 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the basement of the former library building, 9529 Wharton St. There is no admission charge.

The workshop series is sponsored by the RBC Blue Water Project Grant, the SOSCP and the regional district.
