Children 15,000 kilometres away were the big winners in the March 4 exhibition hockey game between school district students and staff.
The game was organized to support the ongoing work of secondary school students from Summerland and Penticton in the small community of Arusha, Tanzania.
Every summer since 2010 students have gone on a three-week sojourn to help with a pair of orphanages and working with the children that live there who range in age from just a few months to 16 years.
Not only have they helped build the structures, they have helped with the daily duties and also spend some classroom time with the kids who live at the orphanages.
In this week’s game the teachers, their ranks bolstered by the addition of four RCMP members, Const. Mike Richardson, Const. Paul Tithecott Const. Brad Caruso and Cpl. James Rutledge.

The game was officiated by Cpl. Don Wrigglesworth of the local detachment and Pen High students Thomas Caruso and Simon Mennell donated their time as linesmen.
In the end it was the teachers prevailing by a 6-4 score, netting the insurance marker with just eight seconds to play into an empty net.
Students and staff work throughout the year to raise money for the trip and supplies needed, which includes doing some parking lot duties for some activities at the South Okanagan Events Centre and a recent auction at the Copper Mug which brought in $10,000.
Work this summer will include completing the work on the dining hall roof.
