Take Action on Radon is working with the Summerland Healthy Community Initiative for the 100 Radon Test Kit Challenge.
The challenge works with communities across Canada to increase radon awareness. Take Action on Radon hosts a free information session on Nov. 19, and at the session the 100 test kits will be available for free to attendees.
“Many Canadians still don’t know that radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers, and that simply reducing radon exposure can save lives,” said Pam Warkentin, Executive Director of the Canadian Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists (CARST), and Project Manager for Take Action on Radon. “We commend Summerland for its leadership in bringing attention to this cancer-causing gas and helping its residents test their home for it by participating in the 100 Radon Test Kit Challenge.”
A recent study commissioned by Statistics Canada found that only eight percent of British Columbians have tested their home for radon. To increase that number, the Government of Canada is committed to reducing the number of radon-induced cancer deaths in this country and this province by working with their partners, stakeholders and community leaders to promote awareness and to encourage everyone in British Columbia to take action against radon by having their homes tested.
“The interior of British Columbia has more elevated radon levels than the two highest provinces in Canada, New Brunswick and Manitoba. With the 100 Test Kit Challenge, we can educate residents of Summerland on how to test for radon in their home,” said Laura McCarron of the Summerland Healthy Community Initiative. “SHCI is excited to be a part of the 100 Test Kit Challenge. Testing your home for radon is simple, and there are proven and effective methods to reduce radon in your home that can save lives.”
The session runs from 6:30 until 8 p.m. at the banquet room in the Summerland Arena. Local radon expert, Cody Wright, will be present to answer any questions related to radon.
