Recently one of the Grade 8 classes at the Summerland Middle School participated in an event called the Real Acts of Caring.

The class was introduced to the cause by their teacher that used to do this when she taught in Coquitlam.

Students were in Summerland and Penticton during the week to perform acts of kindness in both communities.

Some of the acts included paying for people’s coffee, leaving notes around town for others to find, visiting seniors, giving flowers to workers at a soup kitchen and reading to young children at elementary schools.

The class raised $400 by holding a bake sale, doing a bottle drive, as well as each member of the class donating $10.

The school also held a band event and the class received the money they made from the concession to put towards their cause.

In addition, a few of the class members got a chance to go to Victoria to the B.C. Legislature to watch a proclamation announcement for Real Acts of Caring Week.

The class joined 50 other students from Coquitlam who were also participating in the event.

“It was a cool experience it actually showed us that the B.C. government was taking notice for what we were doing and it gave us a voice” said Lily Keys, one of the students in the class.

The one main thing that the class wants everyone to take away from this is that it does not take much to do something caring for someone else whether that action is buying someone a cup of coffee or even giving back to the community in other ways.
