The Rotary Club of Summerland is part of a global network of more than 1.4 million neighbours, friends, leaders and problem-solvers who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.

Nowhere is the Rotary challenge to create lasting change in ourselves more practically applied than in the Four-Way Test, which is recited at our regular weekly club meetings and across the globe in most of the 46,000 current clubs.

The Four-Way Test of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the truth?

2. Is it fair to all concerned?

3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?

4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

The Four-Way Test is one of the world’s most widely printed and quoted statements of business ethics, created in 1932 by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor (who later served as Rotary International president) when he was asked to take charge of a company that was facing bankruptcy.

This 24-word test for employees to follow in their business and professional lives became the guide for sales, production, advertising, and all relations with dealers and customers, and the survival of the company is credited to this simple philosophy.

Adopted by Rotary in 1943, The Four-Way Test has been translated into more that 100 languages and published in thousands of ways.

Rotarians are admired throughout the world because of their challenge to live up to the Four-Way Test.

Few things are needed more in our society than moral integrity.

The Four-Way Test will guide those who dare to use it for worthy objectives: including – developing high ethical and moral standards; becoming successful in a chosen business or profession; and becoming a better citizen and better example for the next generation.

Eloquently simple, stunning in its power, undeniable in its results, the Four-Way Test offers a fresh and positive vision in the midst of a world full of tension, confusion and uncertainty.

We believe that at no time in history have we ever needed a moral compass more than now.

Rotarians in Summerland as part of Rotary International have adopted and are challenged to live up to the principles of Rotary’s Four-Way Test, and our Motto, Mission and Vision.
