The Summerland Quest Society is shutting down.
The service organization, incorporated in 1999, has raised more than $250,000 into projects to enhance the lives of Summerlanders with hearing and speech impairments.
The society has organized bridge tournaments, the Summerland Garden Tour, the Toonie Tree Raffle, garage sales, fashion shows and the Sounds of Summerland. Money raised has gone to provide bursaries.
Some of the Quest Society’s programs and initiatives in Summerland have included hearing systems for elementary schools, microphones for the Summerland Secondary School’s drama department, a hearing enhancement system for Centre Stage Theatre, hearing aids for children, a hearing aid recycling program and others.
Organizers of the program said declining membership is the reason for disbanding the service organization.
“With very few members, the remaining few are finding it difficult to continue,” a statement from the organization read. “Volunteerism is the back bone of our society. I am sorry that our cause is not in the forefront for many. Thank you to everyone who has supported our many activities over the past 19 years. It has been a pleasure to co-partner with many of you in our community.”
