Summerland once had a factory that made boxes.
The Summerland Box Factory, on Victoria Road South, was opened by Muir Steuart in 1925 and was later managed by Bud Steuart.
The factory was sold in 1957 and operations continued for another 10 years.
The Steuart family was prominent in Summerland’s history. Alexander Steuart was born in Lanark, Scotland in 1855 and moved to Summerland from Manitoba in 1904. He married Mary Watson Muir and they had five children.
He built the A. Steuart & Sons packing house, which later became Steuart Fruit Co. and was managed by Muir Steuart, who also managed the box factory and was the first manager of the Co-operative Fruit Growers in Summerland.
Steuart Street in Summerland is named in honour of this pioneer family.
