Summerland Legion displays auxiliary charter

Ladies Auxiliary played important role in history of Summerland Legion

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 22 Summerland hosted an event to thank the branch’s Ladies Auxiliary.

The auxiliary was chartered in 1927, only six years after the founding of the local Legion branch. It was one of the longest-serving auxiliaries in the country.

The auxiliary voted to disband and hand in their charter in December 2021.

“The ladies of the LA have been a hardworking godsend to the Summerland Legion. For several years, it was the LA who raised the money to pay our property taxes”, said John Lawrie, president of the legion.

“It was a tremendous loss to the branch when the LA folded. We found the original charter document, and it is now rightfully displayed in a prominent place in our building along with other important artifacts.”

A parade, led in by a piper, and celebrated with cake took place on Saturday. July 27 to a packed house. Auxiliary past presidents Marion Pshyk and Wendie Maguire hung the newly framed charter on the wall of “LA Corner” for all to see.

Although the formal local auxiliary organization is defunct, the members continue to contribute to the running of the Summerland Legion, representatives of the legion say.
