Summerland CIBC marks 50 years in present location

Bank has seen many changes over the past half-century

For the past 50 years, customers with the Summerland CIBC bank have gone to the branch on Main Street.

On Sept. 12, the bank celebrated a half century at that location, but its presence in Summerland goes back much further.

Jeff Gunn, district vice-president of CIBC, said the bank’s first branch in British Columbia was formed in 1862. Summerland has had a CIBC branch since 1911, although the bank was not always at this location.

The present location, on Main Street, was once the location of Summerland]s post office.

Bonnie O’Sullivan, a former staff member at the bank, was hired before the branch moved to its present location.

She said a lot has changed over the years, but the bank’s commitment to its customers has not changed.

“Customer service was our utmost priority and we had a real rapport with our customers and it was fun coming to work every day,” she said.
