It was a time to appreciate Canada as Summerlanders gathered in Memorial Park on July 1 to celebrate the country’s 155th birthday.

The tone of the event was one of gratitude for the country, a message repeated by speakers at the short ceremony.

“You’re all welcome to this celebration,” said Legion padre David Sparks, adding that all can find a home in Canada, from Indigenous people, families with a long history in the country and recent immigrants from other parts of the world.

“Canada is a wonderful country, a place that has opened its arms to us all,” said Legion member John Dorn, reading from a speech from MLA Dan Ashton.

Summerland mayor Toni Boot said this year’s event marks the first time since 2019 that the community has had a public Canada Day celebration. Because of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, the 2020 event was a small ceremony which was videotaped, and the 2021 event was cancelled entirely.

“It’s been a long couple of years,” Boot said. “It’s great to be in the sunshine on this beautiful day.”

Boot also expressed her appreciation for being in Canada. “We are so lucky to live in this beautiful country,” she said.

The speeches were followed by a barbecue, including cake and ice cream. Face painting and activities for the children were also part of the Canada Day celebrations.
