The Community Foundation of the South Okanagan awarded 30 neighbourhoods with a Neighbourhood Small Grant, including seven in Summerland.
The place-based grants were created for people who want to celebrate and strengthen community connections where they live.
Organizers say grants from $50 to $500 are available to support projects that bring people together, share skills and knowledge, build a sense of belonging and responsibility and respect and celebrate diversity.
The grants program is co-funded by the Vancouver Foundation and delivered in partnership with local governments and the Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen.
In July, the Amazing Race was held at Powell Beach.
In this event, 10 teams of 8 people completed 14 challenges, solve riddles and learn about the history of the area. Each team required a senior and a child to encourage multi-generation interactions.
More than 100 people attended the event.
The Cartwright Get-To-Know Barbecue was held in August.
The event drew 45 people in the Cartwright development and included entertainment for the adults who assembled for the children’s bike parade. A neighbour also gave a composting presentation.
Two-Minute Trout Creek Talks was an open mic event in Trout Creek in late September. Residents were invited to “own the mic” for two minutes.
Speakers talked about topics including the history of local buildings, bear encounters and how the warmth of neighbours has had a lasting effect on newcomers.
Following the event, one couple has announced their intention to organize a garage sale and community potluck.
People are also considering creating an artistic bench in the area.
