Souperbowl Sunday is back for fifth year this weekend

Organizers say they are looking for a fourth chef to compete in round 2 on Oct. 27

Souperbowl Sunday is on this weekend!

The fifth annual Souper Sunday kicks off at the Penticton Soupateria on Orchard Street with round one on Oct. 20 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Don Magill, director with the Soupateria board, says souperbowl is a fun way to let people know what happens at the Soupateria and raises its profile in the community. It’s also a chance to stimulate volunteerism.

“It is very much to raise awareness that we have people in our community who are struggling and need the support of the community,” Magill added. “It’s our only fundraiser so we hope that we generate some more donations to keep the doors open.

“It’s fun. Our patrons get to eat some very good soup and people who normally don’t see that side of our city, they get to experience something different.”

Every year, local chefs compete for the title of best soup. Helped by student sous chefs from the Penticton Secondary Culinary Arts program, the chef has 2.5 hours on Sunday morning to create a 25-litre pot of soup for the 150 diners who visit the Soupateria for lunch. Their culinary creation is then judged by celebrity judges before everybody helps serve the soup to the public.

Local members of the news media, Penticton Vees team members and city councillors will make up the panel of celebrity judges.

This year, Block 300, Bad Tattoo Brewing and a recent addition to Penticton’s restaurant and cocktail scene, Black Antler, will have chefs compete. But, Magill said they are still looking for a fourth competitor for round two.

Round two of the competition will take place on Oct. 27, with the final competition happening Nov 3.
