Summerland’s annual Terry Fox Run will be held this Sunday, Sept. 16 at the Summerland Aquatic Centre on Kelly Avenue.

The annual event is a fundraiser for the Terry Fox Foundation.

Registration is at 10:15 a.m. with the run beginning at 11 a.m.

The course has a three-kilometre and five-kilometre route, with the five-kilometre course following the route used in the annual Giant’s Head Run.

In addition, there will be a one-kilometre hosted walk around town.

The course is suitable for bikes, wheelchairs, scooters, strollers and rollerblades.

Dogs on leashes are also welcome.

In 1977, when Terry Fox was 18, he lost his right leg to osteogenic sarcoma (bone cancer.) While in the hospital for this amputation, he was so overcome by the suffering of other cancer patients that he decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research.

His goal was to raise $1 for every Canadian.

His Marathon of Home took place in 1980. He ran an average of 42 kilometres every day for 143 days.

He was forced to end his run on Sept. 1, 1980, when the cancer spread to his lungs. He died in June, 1981.

Today, more than 9,000 Terry Fox Runs are held annually. All are led and organized by volunteers.
