A mad dash down the 100-block of Main Street will kick off the five-day Penticton Peach Festival.

The annual Downtown Penticton Association Peach Bin Races, Aug. 8, pits teams against one another as they take the wooden crates that have been transformed into racing machines.

The teams can add cosmetic flair and alterations to the bins that are provided by the DPA and BC Tree Fruits, the only restriction is that they can’t add motors to them. At stake is a free entry into the Peters Bros. Grand Parade on Aug. 11, as well as bragging rights.

The race begins at 12:15 p.m. on Aug. 8 in downtown Penticton. The proceeds from each team’s entry fee will be matched by the Downtown Penticton Association and donated to the charity of the winner’s choice. The Boys & Girls Club of Penticton has won the last two of the four years the race has been run.

The deadline for teams to be accepted has been extended until Aug. 1 and the entry fee is $50. If you are interested, you can register your team by downloading the form from the Peachfest website and either drop it off in person at the Downtown Penticton Association office at #3 – 212 Main St. or you can fax it to 250-493-9170. More information about registration is available by calling 250-493-8540.
