A workshop aimed at preparing senior citizens for household emergencies is coming to Penticton next month.

With wildfire season approaching and as part of the city’s initiative to become more “age-friendly,” an emergency preparedness event for older adults is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Penticton Community Centre on June 8.

The workshop, in partnership with Aging Well Penticton, will help people create a household emergency plan and know what services are available in the event of a disaster.

“As recognized in the Age-Friendly Action Plan, older adults have unique considerations and preparation needs to be ready for an emergency so we are very happy to partner on this workshop,” said Brittany Seibert, the city’s emergency program coordinator.

Those who attend the event will have an opportunity to create a “Grab and Go” bag, which includes supplies older adults may need in the first 72 hours of an emergency.

“I would like to encourage all Penticton residents to please make a plan now of what you will do to safely evacuate yourself and family members in the event of an emergency,” said mayor John Vassilaki.

The event coincides with Seniors Week 2022, an initiative recognized across B.C.

As part of the city’s “age-friendly” efforts, free public transit for people aged 55 and over during Seniors Week was recently approved at a council meeting.

The emergency preparedness workshop will take place in Room No. 4 at the community centre.
