Penticton Indian Band elect new chief

The Penticton Indian Band elected Greg Gabriel as their new chief on Oct. 19.

Incumbent chief Chad Eneas, Brian Mitchell Jack, Tim Lezard, and Joseph Pierre all ran in the election.

Gabriel will be sworn in on Oct. 20, and received 107 of the 358 ballots cast by members.

Gabriel served as administrator for the Penticton Indian Band for close to 35 years.

Eneas, who was elected in 2016, received 80 votes, finishing fourth in the balloting. Lezard received 82, Pierre 81, and Jack eight votes in the election.

Every four years, the band elects a new chief and council. Nominations for the council election on Dec. 7 open on Oct. 20.
