The Osoyoos Museum is that much closer to constructing a second level for its new location after receiving a $7,724.41 donation from FIELDS, a community-based Canadian clothing store.

A year-long campaign was launched by the store in the spring of 2021, ensuring that one per cent of sales until 2022 would be donated to the new museum.

“We are pleased to be involved with this museum project,” said Jason McDougall, the president and CEO of FIELDS. “Our goal has always been to do what we can to help improve the communities we are in.”

The money raised from the campaign will be applied to the construction of the lower level of the museum, which includes spaces for artifacts, general storage rooms, washrooms and multipurpose rooms for meetings and events.

“We are very grateful to receive a cheque for $7,724.41 from FIELDS, which is based upon one percent of every sale in Osoyoos over the past year,” Martha Collins said, the chair of the legacy committee at the Osoyoos Museum Society.

It’s not just the expansion of the building that will come to fruition as a result of the donation, though. The pending installation of three new exhibits based on the themes of land, people and industries will be “meaningful and worthwhile to people of all ages,” said the museum’s executive director, Kara Burton.

The Osoyoos Museum recently moved to a new location at 8702 Main Street after spending over 50 years inside the local curling rink.

The new facility was purchased for $1.26 million. With the museum society as the new tenant, however, work on the building was expected to cost an additional $2.5 million when the move was made official in 2019.
