Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers meet at the Harold Simpson Memorial Youth Centre on Thursday evenings. Beavers meet from 6 to 7 p.m. Cubs meet from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Scouts meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Venturers meet from 7:30 to 9 p.m. For details call Trent at 250-494-1990.

Penticton Toasties Toastmasters is a fun way to enhance your speaking, leadership, and confidence skills in a supportive setting. Guests are allowed to three free meetings. Summerland Sportsmen’s Association meets every third Thursday of the month at 7:30 p.m. at Summerland Legion. The SSA focuses on fishing, shooting, hunting, archery and conservation and is affiliated with the B.C. Wildlife Federation.

The South Okanagan Traditional Rug Artists will resume meetings on Thursday, Sept. 7 at 1 p.m. in the Summerland United Church. Have a good summer everyone and we look forward to seeing new rug artists in September.

Author reading — On Friday, Sept. 1 from 2 to 3:30 p.m., Bev Sellars, former chief of the Xat’sull (Soda Creek) First Nation in Williams Lake, will read from her books, Price Paid: The Fight for First Nations Survival, a recent title from Talonbooks, and They Called Me Number One: Secrets and Survival at an Indian Residential School, winner of the 2014 George Ryga Award for Social Awareness. Books will be available for purchase.

Charity Bottle Drive at Summerland IGA each Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Proceeds from the collections will go to support the Summerland Food Bank and Critteraid.

Crib Tournaments every fourth Saturday at the Summerland Seniors’ Drop-in Centre, starting at 1 p.m. Singles welcome. Tournaments are held from September to June, except for December.

The Heritage Advisory Commission meets the third Wednesday of each month at 10 a.m. in Council Chambers at Municipal Hall. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.

Wednesdays on the Water concerts are held Wednesdays beginning at 6:30 p.m. in Memorial Park. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. Bring your chairs, a blanket, a picnic and enjoy a summer evening in the park.

Bridge tournament at St. Stephen’s Parish Hall, 9311 Prairie Valley Rd., Thursday, Sept. 28 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Register with a partner by Sept. 26. Drop off used hearing aids, five years old or newer, at any Summerland drug store. They will be reconditioned for needy seniors.

Recope Society of Summerland offers medically supervised water therapy and land exercise programs helpful to clients with various medical conditions, such as joint replacements, stroke, back problems, arthritis, to name just a few. Programs are offered Monday, Wednesday and Friday. A medical referral is required.

The Ryga Festival needs volunteers. Events run from Wednesday, Aug. 30 to Sunday, Sept. 3. Volunteer opportunities include taking tickets, selling tickets, meet and greet, setting up, taking down and cleaning up venue sites, advertising, driving performers and more.
