At this little library at 580 Braid Street the owners started operating a little library in 2014 with a simple cardboard box out front of their home. Today, their much-loved spot is a local favourite. They even have a bench out front where you can sit an enjoy the serenity, labelled: “Read. Relax.”

Penticton will be getting a new Little Free Library next to city hall.

Council gave their blessing on Tuesday, Jan. 18 to the proposal from Beyond Words, a group made up of local educators.

The little library would be designed in a heritage style made from an apple crate donated by Mattison Farms and placed near the bench north of Penticton near the new ice rink, to represent the many canneries and fruit packing businesses that historically were located in the northern part of Penticton.

Beyond Words would look after the registration of the library with the Little Free Library system, as well as with the maintenance of the library’s books beyond the take-one leave-one free library philosophy.

The project is the result of partnerships between Beyond Words and Literacy Now, the Princess Margaret Secondary School whose students will build the library and with the city’s social development manager Adam Goodwin who helped find a place for the library to go.

City staff will install the library once it’s completed.

With five of the libraries in Penticton so far, all on private land, Beyond Words is also hoping to find a place near Skaha Lake that can serve for another small library. Council supported the idea of finding a spot for a second library closer to the south end of the city.

A drop-off for books was asked to be considered to be added to City Hall but was not included in the motion that council passed.

On the city’s Love Local page they pay homage to the little libraries around the city, offering the location of each one and the stories behind the little libraries.
